The two animated films Ghost in the Shell (Kôkaku Kidôtai, 1994) and Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence (Kôkaku Kidôtai 2, 2004), both by Mamoru Oshii, are considered cult movies that bridge the gap between Blade Runner and Matrix.
Both movies are about artificial humans, cyborgs and androids; where are the boundaries between the human machine and an artificially created life form? Is there a difference between the ghost of a cyborg and the human soul? The second part deepens these philosophical interpolations and even introduces love dolls and stolen human souls. Some scene in this movie could have been shot in the Doll Sweet factory, and open-minded dollmates might feel right at home in this movie.
